Background of Corporate Power

The columns of the Supreme CourtCorporations didn’t always have the amount of power that they currently have in the United States.

This section of the website helps to unearth and trace the historical background of the rise of corporate power through Supreme Court rulings. It traces the rise of the notion of ‘corporate personhood’ and thus corporate rights.

The idea of corporate rights has been controversial throughout history, and often narrowly has passed into judge-made law by 5-4 rullings.

Each ruling has a summary and a pdf download of a Supreme Court case. You’re welcome to skip the download (save paper) and do your research online. (Yes, I’m rebuilding this section of the website too.)

I’m also listing two websites that can serve as references for court cases.

Here’s a list of prominent Supreme Court cases that built up the notion of corporate personhood.
